Zelic: Klopp should stay another season

Friday, March 20, 2015

Borussia Dortmund have endured a disappointing campaign but former defender Ned Zelic has backed coach Jurgen Klopp to remain at Signal Iduna Park beyond the 2014-15 season. Dortmund have flirted with relegation and face an uphill battle to qualify for Europe next season, while the German side crashed out of the UEFA Champions League last-16 to Juventus during the week, raising doubts over Klopp's future at the club. Some pundits and fans think it may be time for Klopp - who guided Dortmund to consecutive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, as well as the 2013 UEFA Champions League final - to take up a fresh challenge elsewhere, with the Premier League looming as a likely destination. Klopp has been linked with moves to Arsenal, Liverpool and more recently West Ham as Premier League clubs attempt to prise the charismatic 47-year-old away from Germany. However, Australian Zelic - a Bundesliga winner and UEFA Cup runner-up during his three seasons with Dortmund between 1992 and 1995 - told Perform: "I think he should stay another season. They have had a good run and won a few titles and got to the Champions League final. "They just got themselves in a situation where they had a few injuries going into the season. Coming off the World Cup as well and then all of a sudden you lose a few games and then you are in a relegation battle. "There are not many [Dortmund] players with much experience in relegation battles, so you kind of have to adapt to it. It takes a lot of character to get out of it and they have done well. "When you go through that sort of run, where first you're fighting to get out of those relegation spots and the danger of being relegated, it is mentally exhausting so that is probably a reason why they have struggled the past couple of weeks."

No mental block for Rooney at Anfield - Van Gaal

Wayne Rooney has struggled to make an impact on the road against Liverpool over the years but Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal denies the skipper has a mental block at Anfield. Rooney has not scored at Anfield in 10 years, with his only goal in 10 appearances on Merseyside coming in January 2005 when United won 1-0. The 29-year-old England international returns to Anfield on Sunday as United look to cement their spot in the Premier League's top four and Van Gaal has backed his captain to end the goalscoring drought. "I don't think that Wayne has a [mental] block, he's a very experienced player," Van Gaal said. "He has played on all the grounds in the world, so I don't think that he shall be influenced by the fans at the stadium, or something like that. "It's strange but it can be like this, and I hope I can change it with Wayne." Rooney is not alone in his struggles at Anfield, with United having only won one of their past seven visits to Merseyside. "I have always my assistant manager [Ryan Giggs] to say that to me," Van Gaal added. "He said that also to the players, in his presentation of the analysis of Liverpool, but I also have the cook, Mike (Donnelly), and he is saying that every day to the players and to me! "I like that, because that shows that it is a very particular match, especially for the fans of Manchester United, and it helps also to focus and concentrate on this match."

Dynamo facing UEFA probe over racism

UEFA announced on Friday that they have opened disciplinary proceedings against Dynamo Kiev amid claims of racial abuse during the Ukrainian side's meeting with Everton in the UEFA Europa League. Dynamo advanced to the quarter-finals of the Europa League via a 5-2 drubbing of Everton at Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex on Thursday but their achievement has been soured by allegations of "racist behaviour". The Ukrainian powerhouse, who triumphed 6-4 on aggregate, will meet Fiorentina in the quarter-finals. UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will deal with the case on March 26. Dynamo are also facing separate charges, with the club in hot water for setting off fireworks and insufficient organisation, pertaining to some blocked stairways - as detailed in a statement from UEFA. Meanwhile, Barcelona also have a case to answer after the European governing body opened proceedings for an "illicit banner" displayed during the UEFA Champions League second-leg fixture against Manchester City at Camp Nou on Wednesday. The case will be heard on May 21.

Pulis unconcerned by Berahinos England absence

Tony Pulis has not discussed Saido Berahino's England snub with the West Brom striker. While Roy Hodgson handed Harry Kane his first England call-up on Thursday, there was no place for Berahino, despite the 21-year-old having impressed with 12 Premier League goals in what has largely been a difficult season for West Brom. Instead, Berahino will play for Gareth Southgate's Under-21s against the Czech Republic and Germany and will likely represent his country in June's UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Asked about Berahino's mood following the squad announcement, Pulis told reporters: "I haven't spoken to him about it. I haven't got a clue. "I think if he gets selected for the under-21s that's a big honour in itself. "I don't know whether he is disappointed or not. He's not said anything to me about it" Berahino's attitude has previously been questioned, with Pulis calling on the need for the striker to receive correct guidance amid reported interest from Liverpool. However, Pulis was full of praise for Berahino's work rate of late, at a time when Victor Anichebe has been out of action. "The lad's been very, very good lately. His attitude and his approach to everything we have done has been excellent," Pulis added. "He has been carrying an injury for the past couple of weeks - he and Brown Ideye have been playing with knocks- but they've really shown good character. "With Victor Anichebe injured we haven't really had any back-up. They've known how important it is for them to play. The two of them have been excellent."

Grant to run the rule over Ghana prospects in friendly ties

Avram Grant will use this month's friendlies against Senegal and Mali to run the rule over potential future stars for Ghana. The Africa Cup of Nations' runners-up will be in France for two matches in the space of four days at the end of March. And head coach Grant will use some untested players as he seeks to boost his options ahead of qualifying for the 2017 AFCON. "We are looking forward to augmenting our squad for future tournaments," Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi told Ghanafa.org. "Coach Avram Grant wants to use the matches in France to observe some players who are excelling for their clubs while keeping the squad in shape for our future assignments. "Senegal and Mali are one of the top national teams in Africa and playing against them will give us the strong test we need ahead of the qualifiers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations."

Hart not giving up on title fight

Joe Hart insists he and his Manchester City team-mates will not give up in their quest to overhaul Chelsea in the Premier League title race. Two defeats in their last three league outings have seen City fall six points behind their rivals, having played a game more. Many fancy Chelsea to cruise to a fourth Premier League crown, but Hart says City will continue to fight right to the end. "I will never give up, ever, and I could safely say that nobody in our dressing room will ever give up either. We will see where that takes us," he said. "West Brom is a huge game and we turn our focus to that. We have no excuse not to throw everything at the Premier League now and give our all - to the fans, the owner, to everyone. "Every game is a must-win now. We have no time to lick our wounds, we have to fly into that game. "We have to win every game, and that is how we will go into it, and see where it takes us. "We have had a few knocks this season, but we have proved it time and time again, and so have our fans, that we come back and we keep fighting."

Stats suggest Man United may dominate derby but Liverpool will win it

Stats suggest Man United may dominate derby but Liverpool will win it - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

liverpool-vs-Manchester-utd

As the top four race hots up, every point becomes more and more crucial. Liverpool against Manchester United is always special but on Sunday the game will move up a notch and Opta-powered fantasy football game Oulala have analysed the recent form of both teams in an attempt to discover how it may unfold.

Both sides go in to the game in hot form making it difficult to separate them but when breaking down the stats from their last six games a more accurate assessment can be made.

Liverpool top the form table with 16 points from a possible 18 after 5 wins and a draw. United have impressed but sit two places back in third with 13 points thanks to 4 wins and a draw. Sunday’s visitors have scored one more than their hosts in their last six games (11 to 10) but have also conceded one more (4 to 3).

A more detailed look at the performance stats from the teams reveals much more than first meets the eye.

United have enjoyed much more possession in their six games than Liverpool, a big 10% swing in-fact (62.2% to 51.3%) and they have also excelled for pass completion (85.2% to 80.5%). The stats suggest that Louis van Gaal’s side dominate games far more comfortably than Liverpool do.

However Liverpool are far superior than their opponents when it comes to shot accuracy (40.7% to 34.3%). The Merseyside club also boast the better conversion rate (14.2% to 13.2%). Brendan Rodgers’ side have made a tackle more per game on average than United have (19 to 18). Liverpool’s stats demonstrate the crucial ability of having been more clinical than United.

The stats therefore suggest that Manchester United could dominate Sunday’s game, yet Liverpool are the side more likely to nick the result.

Hazard, Sanchez and De Gea among PFA Player of the Year contenders

Hazard, Sanchez and De Gea among PFA Player of the Year contenders - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Luis Suarez won it last time around, but he is now plying his trade at Barcelona? So who will it be this time? I am talking of the PFA Player of the year award.

This summer saw the influx of Alexis Sanchez and Diego Costa in the Premier League and it would be right to say that the duo have made an enormous impact for their respective teams.

Costa has been key to Chelsea’s Premier league title tilt with 18 league goals while the Chilean Sanchez has hit the back of the net 13 times. While the Blues sit atop the standings six points clear of Manchester City with a gem in hand, Arsenal are currently third, just a point behind the Citizens.

Eden Hazardwon the PFA Young Player of the Year last time and it would be only fair to say that he could go one better this year. The diminutive Belgian has dazzled for Jose Mourinho’s side and together with Cesc Fabregas and Costa, Chelsea were simply unplayable at times in the earlier part of the campaign.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane has arguably been the find of the season and the youngster has been recently called into the senior England squad. He will be rightly a contender for the young player award.

Elsewhere, David De Gea has been in stunning form for Manchester United bailing the Red Devils time and again when required. United are currently fourth in the standings, engaged in a fight for a Champions League berth for next season.

Manchester City’s title defense has come of the wheels over the past couple of months but Sergio Aguero and David Silva make the list for the top ten contenders.

FIFA presidency candidates slam Blatter for debate denial

Sepp Blatter's decision to turn down a televised debate with fellow candidates for the FIFA presidency has come in for criticism. The FIFA election will take place on May 29, with Sky and BBC offering to televise Blatter up against his rivals - only for the Swiss, who is seeking a fifth consecutive term, to turn it down. Among those contesting for the presidency are Luis Figo, Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein and Michael van Praag. Figo, of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter fame, said he wanted to air his ideas in a public forum. "I think it is a pity. We owe it to the fans of football to hold this debate with all four candidates," the former Portugal international said of Blatter's decision. "It would have been good for all FIFA Member Associations and for the fans of football to hold this debate with all four candidates, but I will nevertheless continue to promote my ideas, which are in favour of reform, transparency and, first and foremost, for football. "I respect all candidates and their proposals and their freedom to decide even if I do not agree with some of them." Prince Ali said he felt the broadcasters should have seen their idea met with more enthusiasm from 79-year-old Blatter. "I believe that this election campaign is an opportunity for an open and mature debate about the future direction of FIFA and all four candidates have a responsibility to football to engage in this debate," the vice-president for FIFA in Asia said. "The broadcasters' initiative is a good one and should be supported."

Manchester United scouts keep close eye on Liverpool striker target

Thursday, March 19, 2015

Manchester United scouts keep close eye on Liverpool striker target - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

According to reports from Manchester Evening News, Louis Van Gaal has ordered United scouts to keep a close eye on Burnley striker Danny Ings. The English International who has scored 9 times in 26 Premier League appearances this season has also attracted interest from Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham. The 22 year old is out of contract in the summer and there have been suggestions that he could change loyalties in the upcoming summer transfer window.

There is no doubt that Van Gaal will go shopping for a striker in the summer after Radamel Falcao has failed to impress in his one year loan stint at the club and Robin Van Persie now being 31, isn’t exactly at his best with persistent niggling injuries.

Ings is thus a fascinating prospect given that he is Engliah which means that any club who acquire his services will have a home grown player in their squad. Despite being free, Burnley would be entitled to a compensation of around £3m as he is under 24.

Singing a striker of Ings’ potential will be a great value for player for the Red Devils as it is expected that they will invest heavily to shape their squad in the summer. If they sign Ings for the paltry sum, it will mean that the Old Trafford side will have funds to spend elsewhere. Moreover, the player is a definite goal scorer and with able support behind him, United could have a little gem up front who can turn games on its head.

Gladbach target eye-catching performance at Bayern

Borussia Monchengladbach full-back Oscar Wendt is excited about taking on Bayern Munich on Sunday and hopes his team can produce an eye-catching performance in Bavaria. Gladbach have not lost in five games in the Bundesliga, while they have only suffered two defeats since the start of December to rise to third in the standings. Wendt and Co. drew 0-0 at home against Bayern earlier in the season but the Swedish left-back is aiming for an even better result at the Allianz Arena. Bayern have not lost in the Bundesliga since the opening round of the season and most recently went down at home against Borussia Dortmund last term, but Wendt cannot wait for the challenge. Pep Guardiola's Bayern (64 points) have a 20-point advantage over third-placed Gladbach. "We're all really looking forward to it; it's an exciting encounter," Wendt told Gladbach's website. "It's always a massive challenge to play against the top Bundesliga team. We know it's going to be tricky but we can prove in this game just how good we are." Wendt added: "We want to put in a top-drawer performance, ideally just like we did against them back on matchday nine. "We defended especially well as a team in that match and managed to get a point. "We need to play as a unit and capitalise on any chances we have to launch counterattacks. "We believe in ourselves and are going to Munich with the intention of coming away with a positive result." Wendt was in and out of Lucien Favre's starting XI in the first half of the season but the 29-year-old has missed just one game in all competitions in 2015. Gladbach have only lost one match in the German top flight this year and Wendt has been enjoying the regular game time. "I think that I put in my best performances when I'm physically pushed to my limits," he said. "I've been very pleased with my performances this year and the team has had lots of success. "I hope that I can maintain my good form and that the team can continue to get results in the remaining games."

Tottenham wanted to get rid of Kane - Sherwood

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood claims the Premier League club wanted to offload star striker Harry Kane last January. The 21-year-old Spurs striker earned his first England call-up on Thursday, having scored 16 Premier League goals this season. Sherwood, now in charge of Aston Villa after a stint at Tottenham from December 2013 to May 2014, said people at the London club wanted to get rid of Kane. The Villa boss said he was behind the decision to keep Kane at the club. "It's great. I resisted the temptation to get rid of him last January because perhaps he wouldn't be the star he is for Tottenham," Sherwood said. "There were people at the club who wanted to bring in another striker and sacrifice Harry Kane. I wouldn't allow that to happen. He got his opportunity and now he's bouncing forward."

Copa Libertadores Review: Cruzeiro edge to the top

Cruzeiro went top of Group Three in the Copa Libertadores after claiming a 2-0 victory at Mineros de Guayana on Thursday. Goals from Leandro Damiao and Marquinhos saw the Brazilian outfit to their first win of the group stages. That one win is enough to see Marcelo Oliveira's men hold top spot on goal difference, with Club Universitario (also five points), Huracan (three) and Mineros (zero) behind them. Damiao opened the scoring in scrappy fashion in the 12th minute. Rafael Romo made a strong save but the loose ball went in the air and Damiao was on hand to head in from close range. The win was sealed with seven minutes remaining. Eugenio Mena was released down the left and squared for Marquinhos to scramble in his team's second goal. Ecuadorian side Barcelona also claimed their first win, a 3-2 victory at Atletico Nacional. Jairo Palomino headed Atletico into the lead in the 27th minute but Barcelona levelled through Ely Esterilla's header. Brahian Aleman's long-range effort snuck under goalkeeper Camilo Vargas to put Barcelona ahead early in the second half. Aleman made it 3-1 in the 52nd minute and they held on despite Yulian Mejia's goal. In Group Five, Palestino and Wanderers drew 1-1 and Juan Aurich scored late to draw 1-1 at River Plate.

No Banega, no worries - Emery

Sevilla coach Unai Emery was impressed with how his team got over the absence of midfielder Ever Banega against Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. Emery's side defeated Villarreal 2-1 at home to wrap up a 5-2 aggregate victory in the Europa League round of 16 but had to do so without Banega, who missed the match after reporting some discomfort in his quad at training on Thursday. Emery picked Vicente Iborra to replace Banega in Sevilla's attacking midfield slot but conceded his team had not dealt with the Argentine's absence very well to begin with at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Banega had played in seven of Sevilla's previous nine Europa League games. "We lacked a bit of control and the late absence of Banega had an impact on us," Emery told Gol TV. "But we focused on where we were strong and we waited for our chances to come." After a scratchy start at home, Sevilla opened the scoring through Iborra in the 69th minute and although Giovani dos Santos equalised for Villarreal, Denis Suarez's header with seven minutes remaining saw Emery's team triumph. Sevilla's coach insisted he has no preference as to who they face next in the Europa League, which they won last season. The La Liga club were joined by Wolfsburg, Fiorentina, Dynamo Kiev, Napoli, Club Brugge, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and Zenit in reaching the quarter-finals on Thursday. "We do not want any rivals in particular. The hype will end up taking over," Emery said. "We'll wait to find out who we draw and then we'll prepare."
