Zelic: Klopp should stay another season

Friday, March 20, 2015

Borussia Dortmund have endured a disappointing campaign but former defender Ned Zelic has backed coach Jurgen Klopp to remain at Signal Iduna Park beyond the 2014-15 season. Dortmund have flirted with relegation and face an uphill battle to qualify for Europe next season, while the German side crashed out of the UEFA Champions League last-16 to Juventus during the week, raising doubts over Klopp's future at the club. Some pundits and fans think it may be time for Klopp - who guided Dortmund to consecutive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, as well as the 2013 UEFA Champions League final - to take up a fresh challenge elsewhere, with the Premier League looming as a likely destination. Klopp has been linked with moves to Arsenal, Liverpool and more recently West Ham as Premier League clubs attempt to prise the charismatic 47-year-old away from Germany. However, Australian Zelic - a Bundesliga winner and UEFA Cup runner-up during his three seasons with Dortmund between 1992 and 1995 - told Perform: "I think he should stay another season. They have had a good run and won a few titles and got to the Champions League final. "They just got themselves in a situation where they had a few injuries going into the season. Coming off the World Cup as well and then all of a sudden you lose a few games and then you are in a relegation battle. "There are not many [Dortmund] players with much experience in relegation battles, so you kind of have to adapt to it. It takes a lot of character to get out of it and they have done well. "When you go through that sort of run, where first you're fighting to get out of those relegation spots and the danger of being relegated, it is mentally exhausting so that is probably a reason why they have struggled the past couple of weeks."

No mental block for Rooney at Anfield - Van Gaal

Wayne Rooney has struggled to make an impact on the road against Liverpool over the years but Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal denies the skipper has a mental block at Anfield. Rooney has not scored at Anfield in 10 years, with his only goal in 10 appearances on Merseyside coming in January 2005 when United won 1-0. The 29-year-old England international returns to Anfield on Sunday as United look to cement their spot in the Premier League's top four and Van Gaal has backed his captain to end the goalscoring drought. "I don't think that Wayne has a [mental] block, he's a very experienced player," Van Gaal said. "He has played on all the grounds in the world, so I don't think that he shall be influenced by the fans at the stadium, or something like that. "It's strange but it can be like this, and I hope I can change it with Wayne." Rooney is not alone in his struggles at Anfield, with United having only won one of their past seven visits to Merseyside. "I have always my assistant manager [Ryan Giggs] to say that to me," Van Gaal added. "He said that also to the players, in his presentation of the analysis of Liverpool, but I also have the cook, Mike (Donnelly), and he is saying that every day to the players and to me! "I like that, because that shows that it is a very particular match, especially for the fans of Manchester United, and it helps also to focus and concentrate on this match."

Dynamo facing UEFA probe over racism

UEFA announced on Friday that they have opened disciplinary proceedings against Dynamo Kiev amid claims of racial abuse during the Ukrainian side's meeting with Everton in the UEFA Europa League. Dynamo advanced to the quarter-finals of the Europa League via a 5-2 drubbing of Everton at Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex on Thursday but their achievement has been soured by allegations of "racist behaviour". The Ukrainian powerhouse, who triumphed 6-4 on aggregate, will meet Fiorentina in the quarter-finals. UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will deal with the case on March 26. Dynamo are also facing separate charges, with the club in hot water for setting off fireworks and insufficient organisation, pertaining to some blocked stairways - as detailed in a statement from UEFA. Meanwhile, Barcelona also have a case to answer after the European governing body opened proceedings for an "illicit banner" displayed during the UEFA Champions League second-leg fixture against Manchester City at Camp Nou on Wednesday. The case will be heard on May 21.
